The nicer the weather gets outside, the more time people spend outside planting bulbs, mowing the lawn, pulling weeds and enjoying sports like softball and soccer. Gardening and other outdoor recreation can be a great workout, but one should be careful not to over extend the natural limitations of the body.

As the weather gets nicer and people over do activities, many complain of back pain. Back pain is the single most reason for activity limitation in people younger than 45. In fact, back pain is the fifth most common reason for all physician visits in the United States and Americans spend at least $50 Billion on back pain symptoms each year. But did you know that most cases of back pain are mechanical, not organic? (This means that the back pain is not caused by a serious disease like inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer.)

This mechanical element of back pain (and pain, in general) is the strength of Chiropractic. Often times when a bone shifts even the slightest bit, it can cause pain. The weight of a dime pressing on a nerve can change the function by forty percent (40%) and cause interference between the brain, the nerve and the organ it supplies. In our office, we remove the weight (or interference) and allow your body to heal naturally.

Several months ago on a Sunday morning before church, I fell to the ground in horrible back pain after a hot shower. My pain was so bad that I had to be carried to my bed where I stayed for the rest of the day.

As soon as WellnessFirst Chiropractic opened, I called them hoping they would take a new patient in my condition. All of the staff were very helpful and immediately scheduled an appointment for me. Michelle was my initial contact at WellnessFirst Chiropractic of Sullivan. She made me comfortable asking questions about my back history and current injury over the phone and continued to be friendly and upbeat when I arrived at the office. She made me feel like I belonged there. On my first visit not only did they do a complete exam, they also did an adjustment which gave me instant relief. I was not cured by any means, but I could walk which was a huge improvement from where I started.

Over that week, I started going to therapy with Sarah as well as adjustments with Dr. Tripps and half hour massages. Sarah was very helpful and adjusted my treatments based on how I was feeling and my symptoms. She took her time to make sure I was comfortable and getting the therapy I needed. Dr. Tripps was always willing to explain what she was doing and how it would affect my body which was so beneficial. She also gave ideas on how to change my posture at work and advice on keeping my body healthy. She looked at my underlying issues instead of just treating the symptoms. One nice surprise to my treatment were half hour massages to help with deep tissue pain. Every visit they made sure to work on the areas that were bothering me that day and it also helped me to relax.

During the treatments, Dr. Tripps asked me questions and found out that I have horrible migraines and daily headaches on top of my back issues. Every morning I took two Excedrin migraine pills when I got up. She adjusted my neck over several visits and I can now say that I am headache free and no longer take daily migraine medicine. Of course occasionally I have a headache because my 8 year old won't quit talking, but nothing like before. Without Dr. Tripps asking questions when doing my other treatments I would not have had relief from my headaches.

Thank you to all the staff at WellnessFirst Chiropractic for helping me! Lately, each visit I was welcomed by Susan, who was always so friendly and genuinely cared about how I was doing. She is a breath of fresh air when you are in pain and was a great help to my recovery as well.
