I don’t know about you, but I struggle when it comes to the topic of exercise. Sure, I know it’s good for me, but there are just so many other things I’d rather be doing. I do find that once I get in a routine, it is easier to stick with it and I feel better. I found so much great information about setting up and keeping a manageable exercise routine that I had to share some of my favorite tips.

  • Make an appointment with yourself. Plan ahead and set your workout times like you would an appointment at work or with a friend…and keep it.
  • If there is a habit you want to reduce (like watching TV) replace some of that time with your routine.
  • Find a friend or family member to share the activity with so you can use this time to catch up and be social.
  • Stick to it for at least 2 weeks.
  • Find a way to hold yourself accountable – checking it off your planner or to-do list or keeping an exercise log. Fitbit and MyFitnessPal will also count steps for you!
  • Find activities that you enjoy doing, so you will want to keep it up.
  • Drink plenty of water. To calculate the recommended amount take your body weight in pound and change to ounces (100 pounds = 100 ounces), divide by 2 (50 ounces). My rule of thumb for exercise is to add a least ½ of the recommended back in (50/2 = 25+50= 75 ounces). While sports drinks may help replace some of the electrolytes, they are full of sugars. My rule for this is to add an extra 20 ounces of water for every sports drink or soda. Instead of drinking sugary drinks, consider adding your favorite citrus essential oil to a stainless steel thermos of water or coconut water.
  • Make sure you dress for comfort and safety. Wear lighter fabrics in weight and color.
  • Make sure your feet are extra comfy and supported!
  • Do a 5 minute warm-up and cool-down. Start at a slower pace also do some stretching.
  • Consult your chiropractor or medical doctor before starting a new routine and see what exercises they would recommend to help you meet your goals.

One suggestions that all of the sites had in common was to consider what is possible and reasonable – in time commitment and in current level of fitness. The important thing is to get started and to keep moving. Exercise is such a big part of overall physical wellness. Movement is one way we can keep ourselves engaged with the power and ability to monitor our own vital signs and understanding the body’s way of communicating with us.
