Our friends at the American Chiropractic Association share that Americans need to change their thinking about Osteoporosis. "It used to be that osteoporosis was considered a disease that affected only the elderly. We particularly associated osteoporosis with older women whose backs were slightly hunched over or those who could no longer stand up straight. Today, the truth is that an estimated 20 million American women suffer from osteoporosis, and 80 percent of them don't even know it."  We need to be aware of this and start prevention early.

Exercising regularly, movement programs like Tai Chi or yoga, plenty of water and a careful diet are just a couple ways to help work with your body to prevent osteoporosis. The National Institutes of Health recommend 1000 mg of Calcium per day for post-menopausal women who are supplementing with estrogen. Women who are not on estrogen should increase that to 1500 mg/day. They do caution to not overdo it with calcium by taking more than the recommended amounts as it may cause kidney stones.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is exceedingly important to getting the right nutrients. Using fresh vegetables with lots of dark leafy greens along with fruit, nuts and seeds with fish or a limited amount of animal protein is beneficial.

Our bodies are very intelligent; it will know where it needs these nutrients the most and get them there. Chiropractic optimizes this body function by reducing the interference in your nervous system, helping to maximize its efforts in processing supplements and getting the calcium and other nutrients to the places that need it most. Chiropractic also helps your body balance so that gravity and wear are more easily carried throughout the body, not just localized to one place.
